The other thing to do is remove the throttle body and clean it with carb cleaner
No need to remove it. Just use an old toothbrush and carb cleaner and reach in as far as you can.

Much better to remove it, you will definately get all the crap out, and it won't go in the inlet manifold.
Its a simple job to do, just need a new gasket

Is it worth doing that on a car that appears to be running ok as I have only ever cleaned mine as far as I can get my finger in with a cloth?

If you are worried about clutch slip then put it in 5th and try and pull off.
If its gonna slip it will then

I would. Its good practice to do on an old car. Cleaning it in situ will not get all the crap off.
Much better to remove so you can clean the back of the butterflies properly.

Get an 8 valve  16 valvers dont have a lot of torque low down, dont think it could be the clutch or engine would be revving.
Valvers have the same low down torque as an 8v

But I have heard from certain owners that the impressive 8v torque and power out puts rival the Enzo
Actually valvers have more torque than 8v but it is achieved at 4, thousand something, where as the 8v acieves its at 2, thousand something. Thats the difference.
No, the torque curve on the 8v and 16v is very similar to about 2500rpm to 3000rpm when the 8v tops out and the 16v continues to increase all the way up to about 6000rpm.

Right - drove around this morning for around 30 mins.  Town driving, which gave the problem plenty opportunity to show itself, but it didn't miss a beat.

Bought some degreaser and just cleaned out the throttle body.  The housing wasn't too dirty, so will see if its made any difference later.
