modding a 1.4 mk3 abd engine...........
« on: 22 August 2009, 19:50 »
ok so coming of the responses from a post about the air box, what have people done to modify this engine and what results did they get? any advice on what to do with it ( aside from scrapping it lol ) i know the easier option is to get a bigger engined car but the reason i chose this car is insurance costs at the minute. i know im not going to get any megga power increases but just want to have a play with it really. so far all i have done is added a k&n panel filter and not sure what to do next

so if you have this car/engine, what would you suggest or what have you done?

cheers ;)

Take it your a young lad who cant afford insurance, theres not much you can do to a 1.4, its a heavy car and it struggles, some say the 8v gti struggles. You can make it sound better with an exhaust and filter. You can however make it handle better if your willing to spend a bit of money.

not a young lad, im 26, its combo of bad postcode and also i have only been driving 2 years and my last 2 cars i didnt have for a full year to get any no claims, they were both 2ltr, not the petrol that killed me, it was the insurance. even at my age was £1500 tpft! i was thinking about exhaust, hopw does the 1.4 cope with decat? back box is on the cards next month and once my wedding is out of the way then i can pay for a lowering kit ( shock and springs )

exhaust wont really make much difference to performance. it will add some noise though.

You have the single point injection unit so thats even more sluggish then the later dual injection!

best you could do really is make it more responsive, put a nice filter on it. if you had access to vagcom you could alter the timing slightly so it ignites earlier (although i wouldnt, made my polo pink alot of the time).

Other then that you can change the head and cam, but your talking £££s and from what i can remember the power increase isnt that much.

Best leaving it as is for a year and then getting a bigger engine.

Honestly mate don't bother. I've had an ABD engined Mk3 and it was the worst of the worst. I upgraded to a Mk3 with a AEX engine and could immediately feel the difference. It was like stepping from a 1.1 Punto to a Golf GTI lol. Seriously a lot faster.

I agree with the above, the 8v gti is slow, so the 1.4 is a no go really.. come on.. you must realise it...
Mk3 Golf Gti:Full Milltek system and Decat,K&N filter,mk2 Cam,-1.5 degree camber shims, borbet a's, toyo proxies, hot tuning coils, brembo vented discs, greenstuff pads...Soon to have Eaton Power

mk3 16v 5dr Gti,mintex extreme pads,drilled/grooved discs, lowered, cat back powerflow system, omp panel filter with modified airbox, debadged grill, started prep for spraying, lots to come :D

Bumper Vents :D

ABD actually is the worst of the worst, it's the crappest 1.4 mk3 engine available. mine sucks bad, i'd swap it for the ABU 1.6 in a years time if i were you.. straight swap iirc

What engine is the ABU? Is that a single point injection 1.6 engine? My 1.6 is an AEE but is multi point injection
