starter motor problem.......?

i had a recon motor on 4 months ago and its been find til now i have had no problems.

the starter would just make a noise and wouldnt turn the engine over it took at least 12 attempts before it would start.....

i took it back and the bloke said its turning over fine on the bench..... and he came back out and said it came with a round metal bush which fits in the bell housing on the end of the starter shaft.....

i remember trying to fit this but it would go in........
i also checked to see if there was anything inside and there wasnt......

the bloke said that that may have been the problem if the shaft wasnt being held in place the pinion may miss the flywheel....... but i knew this wasnt the problem.....

he gave me another one and tonight its started to play up its been fine for at least 8 turns...... and earlier i went to start it and it turned slow at first very slow......
its not the battery..... and then it kicked in.........

sticking i thought.......

so i drove to my mates and parked it on his drive which is abit steep........ i wanted to turn the engine over a fw times without it starting just to slacken up the starter....
idisconected the coil wires and fired it up it started to turn very slow and then it kicked in turning normal.......
it did this a few times and then i noticed smoke.......

it was from the starter! also then i went to start the engine normal it didnt quiet start and the starter started making a funny noise with the ignition on for off......
i unplugged the starter switch wire and this made no didference! its was like a juddering sound.......

the starter was red hot....... the smoke was coming from the solinoid near the positive terminal the paint had blistered abit.........

so i gets it started and i go for a blast down the duel carrageway to re charge the battery...... the positive terminal was very very warm is this normal which cranking!

i gets back to my house and knocks it off.......... i started it it turns over fast and fine............ knocks it off did it again........ and its does the same............

have i done anything at it......... it is damaged!

and will my battery be ok......... got a multimeter on it and its 500amp and 12.83volts!

I had a similar problem to that. Try to turn the engine over for about 3 times then wait for a few minutes, then try again. Mine used to fire up straight after.

Be careful as mine also caught fire at the garage. It was the solinoid box tontop of the motor.

While your at it, clean up the ends of the wires to the motor with some sand paper or something.

The battery should be okay.

the only thing which concerned me is that it got really hot..... the motor wasnt that bad the solinoid was really hot. thats where the smoke came from but this was the paint burning! probibly the s*** paint making it seem like theres something major wrong.....

i'll fire it up in a bit! see who it goes......

it says in the haynes book brushes sticking.......
its a recon so they probibly are.......... infact it getting that hot as probibly sorted the sticking out!
