Project guidance for a Mk1 noob!

Hi all,

First post in the mk1 section, although long time lurker! But hopefully after finalising a deal on my first mk1 you will all be seeing a bit more of me!

After finding a '82 1.1 mk1 local to me the opportunity to purchase it was too good to pass up. so far she seems in fair nic, minimal rust, mainly front inner wings and a little around the screen. sill's and boot seem pristine  .

i have spent a while reading up about various options on what engines can be fitted and what other people have done. as this will be a toy for me (my mk2 abf is my daily) i think i will stretch beyond just fitting a 9a or kr, sourcing parts such as intake manifolds doesnt seem fun!

my thoughts so far are to pick up a mk3 16v and transplant the subframe into the back of the mk1. most of the fabrication/wiring doesnt phase me too much although peoples views and opinions would be much appreciated as i dont want to wreck what is a clean 2 door non sunroof shell!

i'll update with some pics soon, hopefully you will all be as impressed as i have been!

fitting engine in the back?
not sure this would be a good idea given the lightness that would be left on the front i.e doubt it would turn in very well

alternatively in the 80s there were afew twin engined mk1s that competed at pikes peak maybe try that?

An intesresting idea but too many headaches for my liking!

i did wonder if weight would be an issue, but with a fuel tank up front and properly weighted springs could this be helped?!

Any other ideas for what could be done with a mk1 shell?!

Leave it standard and watch the value rise.

id kinda have to agree on that one.... well, leave it so as it can be put back to standard when you come to sell anyhow.

if she was a gti i would probably be more tempted to restore her back to original, but it seems like alot of effort for a 1.1 c?!

Hi all,

Another way i could go that could be interesting could be front mounted ABF running propper management, going to a mk2 escort rear axle, any thoughts? this would solve the light front end problem?!

this could be useful as we're picking up 2 escort axles on the weekend, 1 is going in my dads morris 1000 van with a 4age on twin 40's, so we'll have a spare!

dont suppose there is a longtitudinal gearbox that would bolt to the abf motor?!
