Changing sump gasket on 1.4 golf.
« on: 20 August 2009, 10:45 »
Easy enough to do, but I need to know is it safe to use brake cleaner on the sump to get the old oil off, or should I get some de-greaser and be done with it?

Degreaser is usually pretty thick and may take a bit of hosing off, while as brake cleaner should thin the oil out and i'll let it drip off onto some old newspaper.

I've heard its better to let the engine be a bit warm when doing this too, i'm guessing because the oil will run out the sump easier and bolts will slacken easier too?

I would do it with the engine cold, all the oil will be in the sump and a lot less messy.

I could, but then any cold, old oil left inside where the sump gasket is will form before I put the new seal on, which may not be good?

While as warm oil should all drain out through the sump plug.

Maybe though... it simply wont make any difference!!!  i'll just be glad not to have shares in oil, lol.....

Yes but if you do it whilst warm it will be dripping off the bottom of the engine etc and is / will be a mess, make sure you clean the mounting face before fitting the new gasket.

True, but I guess any oil is going to linger where the old seal was on the lip, before the new one goes on.

Hopefully I'll be able to source it seperately, not as a complete engine seal pack, like some manufacturers

Not really, if you clean it all off you should be fine.

GSF or euro car parts will be able to supply the gasket.

Cool, a few bolts and an oil change later just for peace of mind, I should be good to go...  :smug:
