Offsets ????

I've read the quick link on here as to which offsets fit which car , but is it the bigger the offset number the more the wheels stick out towards the wheel arch .ie. gives a wider stance ?? Sorry for the nub question , but dont wanna order my wheels only to get them and then not ruddy fitting  and then sending 'em back

The lower the number the more it sticks out.
