Any common ABF oil leaks
« on: 17 August 2009, 09:12 »
I've a small but persistent oil leak leaving 3 inch plogdes under my cart over night. I'm not noticeably loosing oil from the dibstick, but there's a growing collection of stains on the road where I park.

There's some seepage around the rocker cover, but I've tested and its not the source.

just wondering if there is abnything common that leaks on an ABF before I clean it off with degreaser and go looking.

Thanks

makje a note of which side the splodges occur, also check if its engine oir or gearbox. (sniff it, gearbox oil smell is 'unique')

could be from the sump, crank seal, cam seal, diff cup flanges, sump plug, oil filter, oil cooler, oil sensors, etc.  loads of potential areas :)

gearbox leaks are an 'uh oh' item, mainly cos they're a pain to do while box in the car.  could be the crank sensor if its been replaced recent and the o'ring wasnt fitted.  crank seals a bit of a mare to do as well, but I've not had one thats needed replacing on an abf so far

I do realise this thread is old, but thought I'd add some experience.

I've had a leaking ABF from around the oil filter area for a couple of years now.

Wasn't much to begin with, but lately its been bad.

I noticed it is coming from the oil cooler area which is part of the oil filter attachment housing.

Today, I decided enough was enough.  I removed the oil filter, and found the nut holding the cooler wasn't even finger tight.

The nut goes on the same thread as the filter attaches and is 27mm i think.  Maybe 24.

I tightened it up and fitted a new filter.

I THINK it has stopped the leak.  I will know for certain when the car get MOT'd tomorrow and driven a bit.

Worst case scenario is that I need to change the cooler assembly.

Yeah?

Might still do it to be honest.

It's getting is a retest tomorrow for suspensions and brake items.

I'll have another look at it.

I gave it a 5 minute run this afternoon and the main leak disappeared.

There was still a little oil present, but i'm not sure if it was old oil or fresh oil coming out as it was underneath/at the back.

I'll check it out tomorrow.
