Air con not working, help please????

My wifes got a mk5 Gt tdi

The car has not had air con since we bought it over a year ago now

Had the car regassed about a month ago and tested for leaks, and all was fine.

Im wondering if anyone has had a similar problem?

Im guessing its probably an electrical fault?

Phoned around to get a vac-com dignostic check but have been quoted around £150-200 and theres no way im paying some one that just to plug a laptop in to the car and press a few buttons

Its got the to point where the car is unbearable to drive, as the "normal" air ventalation system is well pathetic, and as many of you know these modern cars are not designed to be driven with windows open these days, as the noise and buffeting is deafening!!!!

Really need some help here, as its almost got to the point where ive even thought of selling the car!

Is the car still in warranty as there is a known problem with one type of AC compressor failing suddenly.

as bacillus said one type of compressor is known to be faulty. had mine done not long ago under warrenty after being told it just needed regassing. after reading up on the compressor problem on here i told them to check that!

Mines suddenly stopped working too. I press the ECON button so the light goes out and nothing happens, no cold air. I've only just had the car recovered from a fault Coil Pack so this is just another thing to go wrong. Any ideas? If I plug in a Diagnostic unit in will it tell me if the AirCon is faulty?!

Greg, if you use vag-com, it will not only read the full manufacturer-specific fault codes, but also provides a diagnosis too.

Generic fault code readers are generally extremely limited in their capabilites for actually 'diagnosing' what individual fault codes are.

My car is an 04 plate so well out side warrenty i think? I dont know much about warreny as ive never taken one out/never bought a car from a dealer?

I live in North Essex near Colchester/Braintree/Sudbury

Just want to get it sorted as its really getting to the point where the car is going to get sold other wise!!!

I did mention its a Gt tdi/sport? tho im guessing the pumps will be the same anyway.

Lee, does your car have full VW service history?  If so, even though it is out of warranty, they should still cough up with a goodwill guesture, especially as there is a TSB regarding the dodgy air con compressors.

if you're passing the midlands any time soon i can do a quick scan for you, but i'm sure there are a fair number of people a bit closer to you with the necessary kit. Have a look in the vagcom section of the forum

yes full vw history it is due a service but imreluctant to use them as im unsure how much it would cost?

I got quoted £650 buy them when I went in last time

when you say good will jesture, do you mean they will fix it cheaper than the norm? or for free?
