  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
what you have is a non-k-jet starter. these only have 1 spade terminal for the starter trigger. K-jet cars need 2 spade connectors, the other one is for the cold start system. Tell the parts guy at G&S to stop being a muppet and order you the correct part.

the starter earths thru the bell housing, the red/black spade is the starter trigger and the spade with the 2 black wires is for the cold start system.

you need one of these:
90184  STARTER MOTOR-BOSCH    G2 1.8 GTi/16V >90 (>Ch.1G-L-990000)    99.00
90185  STARTER MOTOR    G2 1.8 GTi/16V >90 (>Ch.1G-L-990000)    62.00

Im sorry mate i've no idea what you mean by the bell housing im afraid??
Just to clarify things im no mechanic myself but I like to have a go where possible
so im unaware of most of the proper technical terms used.

Tnx

The bell housing is the area of the gearbox which the starter 'plugs' into. The bell housing bush is a copper(ish) ring that acts as the end bearing for the starter motor. It should always be replaced as a matter of course when replacing the starter. If it isn't replace and is worn, then the new starter won't last.

Hi ben,

Tnx for explaining that for me I am definately with you now.
Yes the new motor came with a new bell housing bush, the copper ring.
As there was one already inside I didnt fit it but now you've mentioned it I will remove the old one
and replace it with the new, it can easily be done as i've not tried starting the car yet which is still
part of the problem.

The guy who sent the last post before you suggested I need the:

90184  STARTER MOTOR-BOSCH    G2 1.8 GTi/16V >90 (>Ch.1G-L-990000)    99.00

This is supposedly the one I have bought and it only has one spade connection but otherwise
looks and fits exactly as the original did.

Could you possibly advise me on exactly what the red and black leads actually do??
This way I could make a decision whether I actually need the black one connected to anything
or whether I could leave it isolated ?

Thank you

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
for the wire functions, see my last post ;)

if the starter you got was definitly 90184 then GSF is selling the wrong part for the job, all KR 16vs require a dual spade starter motor.

Hi rubjonny,

I've just read your last post mate and im kind of with you on this one.
I can only presume the motor I have is the 90184 as this is what I asked for but you could well be right
and im not certainly not 100% convinced but as i've already been back to them once to query the possibillity
id just like to be really sure im not making a mistake as they say I just need the red wire and this motor fits my
model and a few others.

Thanks for your interest in this issue im very greatful.

Rubjonny,

Can you tell me what a KR 16V means or stands for pls?.
So is it worth me trying just the red trigger cable and isolateing the cold start 2 black wire trigger or
would I be completely wasting my time, or doing something dangerous?

I've taken everything you've said onboard and will take it back if need be.

Thanks

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
Sorry KR is the engine code for the MK2 16v :)
The black wire is for the 5th injector, if you leave this disconnected it wont spray while cranking over on the starter. This can make cold starts a bit tricky, especially in winter!  It wont be dangerous or anything, just make sure the wire cant ground out anywhere as voltage comes thru it from the cold throttle enrichment system as well.
It's up to you if you want to leave it off or not, personally I'd take it back and either get it swapped for the right part or get your money back and go elsewhere :)

Hi rubjonny,

Tnx for shedding some more light on the subject as it was a tad confusing.
You really appear to know your stuff and im inclined to go along with your analysis
and I really appreciate the time taken out to help me with this subject.
Think im gonna take it back and look elsewhere, sounds like the best idea.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped with this issue its all been much appreciated!
