Im a newbi here so firstly id like to say hello to all

I am hoping somebody may be able to offer some sound advice
regarding a problem with a new starter motor?

I have a golf gti mk 2 16v big bumper 1991 H registration and have owned her for 3 years now,
it's not my first golf as i've had 2 others previous to this but in all that time i've never had to change
a starter motor and im now really stuck.

I've removed the old starter motor with out too much hassle and managed to purchase a new one.
Problem is on the old one I had a live wire and an earth wire which were both seperately connected
to the motor via they're own female clip/spade connectors.
The new starter motor however has only one spade connection and neither the original live/earth
wire clips can connect to it, im v.confused as im told the new motor is the correct one to have...

I've considered stripping the wires and fitting a standard female spade connector to
the live wire which could then be connected to the new motor but this still leaves the earth wire.
Could this possibly be wired into a standard ring connector and then be connected to the casing
with the main battery cable and earth perhaps?

Is this safe, can anybody help me out here?
Thanks in advance

Where did you get the starter motor from? the dealer?
I had this problem years ago, the design has been changed apparently.
I got one from GSF which had the old design.
Sorry i can't help anymore

Hello mate,

Tnx for the post.
I bought the new starter motor from  german and swedish also and they're adament
that the part is the right one and fits many models lol but they couldnt advise on how to rewire
the new part. Im gonna try talking to a main dealer tomorrow and see what they say.

Tnx all the same, your input is appreciated

Take the old one to them and show them the difference. Probably also worth emailing thier head office so they can advise staff and list the years thier version fits on the website.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

The 1 wire is for the starter +ve. The starter itself earths through the bell housing > gearbox > chassis > battery.

Did you replace the bell housing bush when you fitted the new starter - if not, then pull it out and fit one.

Hi all,

I cannot post any pics as the new starter motor is already on my car and I
part exchanged the old one on day of purchase which is standard practice for a discount.

Luckily i've now spoken to my sister-in-laws father who works as a mechanic and is gonna consult
his electrician workmate today on the possibility of re-routeing the earth wire to the casing safely
as suggested... Thinking about it this would make sense so i'll just have to wait and see.

Anyway im feeling confident that the issue will be resolved, it's just a shame i've been stressing out for a week
over something that should've taken half hour to complete and im missing my car too!
I'll keep this post updated and display my progress as soon as I find the remedie, maybe it can help
someone else who might come across the same issue in future.

Tnx for the posts guys, much appreciated!!

Hello Ben,

Im sorry mate i've no idea what you mean by the bell housing im afraid??
Just to clarify things im no mechanic myself but I like to have a go where possible
so im unaware of most of the proper technical terms used.

Tnx
