« on: 12 August 2009, 23:02 »
Hi all, :)

Sorry im a beginner on here but wanted to ask a silly question it maybe. :D

Basically my alarm went of the other day and it some how has drained my battery. I have a key but i normally open the car with the central locking system. I am now trying to open the bonnet but have to access the inside, but i cant find where the actual lock is to insert the key in?

Is there a way to finding it? or is there another way to open the bonnet? any help be much apprecited :)

you mean bonnet or boot?

bonnet is opened by the release handle in the driver's footwell area. If it won't open, you will need to remove the grille and open the release manually.

If you're talking about the boot, there is no way to open the boot manually from the outside. You have to use the button on the keyfob. If you are inside the car and you can get to the boot from the inside, you can open it.

Take down the back seats, crawl under the parcel shelf. There's a circular cap with a slit on the boot's inner surface. Use something like your key to prise it off and then look for the little lever (with your finger, you can't see it) and press it to the left (as you face, so to the driver's side of the car). This will release the boot from the inside. Take a torch and a mini-fan. It's hot and dark in there.

The bonnet is the big sticky out bit at the front with the engine inside, yep? And the boot is the bit at the back for bring home the beer. If the back bit, press in the big circular vw badge in the middle (assuming it's a golf gti) and if it's the front bit ie the bonnet, there's a lever on the drivers side footwell on the right. Not really sure from your post what the issue is.....any more info?

Not sure either what your post means

The usual keylock position is on the drivers door next to the handle

I can only assume your car is 2nd hand and has had the keylock removed by the previous owner ( a security mod a few owners have done)

If so I hav'nt a clue how to get into the car

Sorry for the post was in a rush writing it up and lost all idea of what i was doing lol

Basically yeah the guy above got it correct that i am looking for the door lock next to the handle. I cant find the door lock, i bought it private of a mate who says its never happened to him so just trying to see how to get to open the front bonnet, so i can get access to charge up the battery.

Any ideas if the door lock is there and if it has been removed what can be done?

Cheers

Faz, do you actually have a physical 'keyhole' in the exterior door handle on the drivers side?  Because even with a flat battery, you can still put the key in the lock, and turn it forward (clockwise, about a 1/4 turn) to unlock the drivers door.  The alarm may sound, but this will go off when you put the key in the ignition, and turn on the ignition (providing there is enough juice in the batt to light the warning lamps).

Regarding the actual bonnet, a Golf aint no Ford <spit> - VWs simply use a pull-handle in the drivers footwell to release the bonnet - so you don't/can't use a 'key' to open the bonnet!

Hope all this helps, but keep us updated, and ask again if you want any more help.

Hi,

There is no physical keyhole, i think they at some point have been taken out. As i cant see one in the boot either or the drivers side. If it did i could just put the key and open it no problem but it just doesnt seem to have one anywwhere unless im missing something completely :(

I think the only option looking at it is, to try and open up the front bonnet and get access to the battery, which is a problem.

Hi,

Ahhhhhh . . . I see.  So someone must have removed the original door handle for some reason.  Why, though, phases me!

As i cant see one in the boot either or the drivers side. If it did i could just put the key and open it no problem but it just doesnt seem to have one anywwhere unless im missing something completely :(

There never was any keyholes on the Mk5 in the boot, bonnet or the passenger side or rear doors either.  Only the drivers side front door (on five door cars ) had a keyhole.

I think the only option looking at it is, to try and open up the front bonnet and get access to the battery, which is a problem.

Yes, I agree now.  If you look at the 'child section' of this Mk5 forum - 'maintenance + info' - there is a sticky thread for 'Free Golf V workshop manuals'.  Download the correct manual, and it will tell you how to remove the front grille - but I have a strong feeling that unless the bonnet is opened before, you can't remove the top bolts of the upper grille.  Which would probably mean jacking it up, removing the undertray, and trying it like that.  The only other way which might work is to jack up and remove the front drivers side roadwheel, and the plastic wheel arch liner, and then you should see the bonnet release cable - by tugging on the outer cable, you should be able to release the bonnet.  Otherwise, it will have to be RAC or AA, or lift the car and take it to a Dub stealer.

One final comment, if you do open the bonnet, the alarm will still sound - even with a flat battery, because the alarm has their own discrete back-up battery, which works the alarm when the main battery is flat or disconnected.

HTH

appreciate the help, so on a normal mk5 its just on the drivers side the physical keyhole normally? Just wondering if i was walking past the car, would i physically see the key hole? or do you have to open the handle for it to come out?

Cheers
