8v Digifant Chip - Timing setup???
« on: 05 September 2004, 15:23 »
I purchased a digifant chip and fitted it to my 8v golf. Seem to run ok and made a slight difference. I just sent it to my mechanic to have the cam belt done and when he has come to set it up ie doing the vacum tests and timing etc the car has gone sluggish and the timing cant be set right. Has anyone experienced this? Is there alternative settings on a chipped car.

Thanks D

set the timing statically then strobe time it to get it perfect. remember to unconnect the blue temp sensor on the front of the block, get a mate to hold the revs at 2000 to 2500 rpm and time it off the flywheel viewing hole, get the flywheel mark in the middle of the window. do this by slackening the distributor bolt and turning the distributor gently one way or the other.

it helps to paint the timing marks white with tippex or something cos it makes them easier to see under a strobe light

Veedubgti8v, the procedure you mentioned is the same as the haynes manual but as that was written for a car presumably running leaded petrol does the ignition timing need to be advanced slighty in order to run properly on unleaded and avoid pinking? :-\

I set up my timing exactly as outlined above but found that the car was sluggish and pinking was also heard under load. After advancing the ignition through trial and error the car is running much better now. :)

Ukpitbull did you not get any documentation with your chip?  ???

You just need to make sure the static timing as set up properly - your engine has a knock sensor that along with the ECU advances and retards the timing anyway !!

If you've had problems best to try the old chip and make sure it's not a dodgy chip.

Are you sure that when the cam belt was changed the cam timing was set properly?? (ie. the pulley and crank marks are lined up correctly and still do after tightening?)

Does your car have a standard cam? Could i have something else that requires different timing??

only on a 16v, 8v digifant has a knock sensor so should if its working advance or retard automatically as necessary. i dunnop about 8v k jet tho
