Hello

After some advice on mileage with my GTI

Basically got an 08 GTI with 16,000 miles on the clock, thats in 13 months, but my work is moving depots and I'll start doing an extra 7,000 or so miles a year, any ideas what this will this will do the depreciation? What's a high mileage GTI?

Toying with px'ing it against a dirty diesel dog to save some cash on fuel, current thoughts are a MkVI GTD or Scirocco 170 TDI, but I know I'll regret it when I turn the key and think I'm on a canal boat.

Thank you

Bob

Around 20k miles in a GTI would work out at £3250 a yr in fuel. In a diesel it would work out at around £2160 a year in fuel.

Depreciation of either car would be roughly the same with the mileage you are proposing putting on the car.

This means it boils down to

Would you rather save £1.000 a year on fuel and get a dirty diesel

or

Would you rather stick with your GTI and enjoy the fact that you have already gone down the depreciation scale far enough to neutralise the effect of the fuel cost against buying a new car and having to suffer the first year depreciation all over again

When you factor in what the gti will have lost plus cost of changing, you'll be far more than a grand worse off

If you can afford the fuel then stick with the GTI. As others have said, the cost to change will probably be more than what you would save in fuel.

I don't understand people who change to a diesel to save money on fuel as depreciation is always going to stuff you, BUT have you checked on what your GTi is currently worth as a trade-in of private sale? And I don't mean book price.

I was bored last week and decided to go look at a BMW at the local car supermarket - they offered me more than I paid for my 57, 08 GTi 11 months and 10k miles ago against ANY of their cars! Granted I bought when the market was on its arse in Sept last year for a very good price, but it's worth a look - many cars are reaching over book, especially desirable ones like the GTi. :) Of course this could mean that the car you buy is also expensive - but it all depends on the deal I guess.

I agree - I was told by a VW Dealer yesterday, that I would get more for my ED30 now, then what I paid almost 6 months ago!

Thank you for your advice,

Going to stick with the GTI, especially as work will help paybfor the fuel now. Not sure I'd get what I paid back as I spent £20.5k, be nice though.

My main concern was a high mileage GTI would depreciate more than a diesel.

Plus the longer I stick with it, the more I can spend on my next one, Alpina D3 has potential as a diesel dog.

Thank you

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?
