Rusty coil pack. Any ideas?
« on: 10 August 2009, 15:23 »
Had my GTI serviced at the weekend. Spark plugs were replaced, purely as a matter of course at my request and on removing the coil pack (the one on the far right, near the battery) noticed that the bottom inch of the pack was light brown (i.e. rusty water marks on it) and the spark plug was also the same. Basically there has been some water down inside there at some point. It has been running perfectly though.

Anyway, replaced all the plugs and it's all running fine still.

Any ideas how water could have got down into there? All the other three were perfect. Also, the coil pack is a pretty tight fit and covered by the engine cover.

Not unduly worried as there is obviously not any water in there now and it has always run perfectly. I suggested that the maindealer may have pressure washed the engine bay before I bought it (May this year) but am still surprised that water could get in there.

Will probably get a new coil pack at somepoint anyway, although I understand that these are expensive. Any ideas on cost?

Coil packs are actually quite cheap, at about £25 +vat.

We can speculate till the cows come home how it got rusty!

Just go to your nearest Cromwell store (www.Cromwell.co.uk) and get a tube of Rocol AquaSil silicon grease, and put a thin smear on the bottom of the coil pack, where it fits on the top of the spark plug, and also the multi socket on the top.  This will keep out any water, and is completely safe on rubber and electrical items.

Ever jet washed your engine bay? Would be more concerned if it was actually wet, maybe it was raining last time the coilpack was removed
