Camshaft upgrade
« on: 09 August 2009, 20:45 »
So i have a 1.6 and have heard a camshaft upgrade will do it the world of good. Could anybody tell me what exactly this upgrade will do to my performance, fuel economy and how difficult it is to do?

You will get a slight increase in power further up the rev band in return for a loss of torque low down and a lumpy tick over if a fast road cam, but you will need to do other intake, head and exhaust mods to get max benefit. Its actually quite easy to do especially if your changing the belt anyway, which you must do.

fast road cams dont really make the tickover lumpy,   only the cams with a lot of overlap get lumpy
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

A 270 duration cam is the max reccomended for everyday road use and will give you a bit of a lumpy tickover but a 255 also classed fast road will give you a smooth tickover.

{ 266 / 270 / 272  }  all pritty much the same cam TBH ,  all very tame  and they idel almost like a stock cam in an 8 valve.

at 285  they get noticable,  very flat to 2.5 / 3 then they take off ans the idel has got a bit rough.  the rough idel everyone things about associated with cams is the the 290 - 305 cams   they idel fast and ROUGH
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Just an 8v cam will do. I think Khare Bear got an extra 5hp or sommat (inc the other mods he made too?).

The cam belt will be the same as the GTI cam belt which coincidently is the same as the 1.6 Driver cam belt   (all 8v Golf MK2s have the same cam belt iirc) oh and the tensioner is the same too.
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.
