dash lights and guages?
« on: 03 September 2004, 16:48 »
on the 16v clocks, is the guage in the middle at the top with a red led in the middle the water temp guage. And is the led for oil pressure? If so my temp guage never moves. Where is the sensor? And the led flashes when it feels like it. Should i flush the engine and change the oil and clean up the contacts on the oil pressure sender on top of the oil filter?  ???

the one your talking about is the water temperature gauge and the led signifies overheating or low water level i think, i dont know were the sensor is on the 16v tho hang on and i will check my etka

yeah the led that flashes in the top section of the water temp gauge, it flashes for a few secs on start up (well on my 16v anyways!!) then i think if they flash whilst running possibly low coolant level or faulty float unit (in expansion bottle), and i think if you 'overheat' the car the led is on constant until the temp drops, but fortunately ive never over heated a golf to find out if this works!!

For the last 15 years my temp gauge has only ever worked very occasinaly, about once every 6 months! I took off the sender unit from near the valve cover, clenaed it, and the connections etc... No help. Plugs on back of clocks looked fine.. The other day i saw a connector along the wire, yellow, which looked like it just joined two pieces of wire together, anyway, having cleaned that, it has been working fine! Don't know how accurate it is though, it seems fine as the reading has been mosly in the middle... However, mine is a 1.3, and yours may not hav this connector, thoiiugh i'm sure in the Haynes manual it says it does??

So from what you have all said the guage is the coolant temp and the led is for overheating. So does that mean that the buzzer is for oil pressure?

the light will flash if your water level is low. dont know what happens if it overheats. i assume it's flash again as this is more likely to attract your attention than just a solid light

if your buzzer goes then its low oil pressure - the oil light will also flash

as for your water temp sender. there is 3 spade connectors around the water outlet on the side of the block. all are water temp senders. the important bit is the colour of the wire going to them

red/yellow = dash gauge
red/green = ISV/Cold Start
blue = ECU

all 3 are interchangable so there is no specific order they have to be in
