gearbox problem - 3rd gear
« on: 07 August 2009, 16:13 »
hi all

im a newby so a big howdy hoo from me!

just wondering if anyone else have a problem with 3rd gear when the engine is upto temperature?

i have a 02 golf tdi 130bhp (6 speed box) and am a little concerned that it makes a vibration type noise going from 2nd to 3rd (intermittant)

anyone else have this problem or have any ideas what it could be (hopefully im not facing a large garage bill!!)

thanks
marcus

hi

yeah a little bit of vibration and resistance too (doesn't "crash" the gears as such)

im wondering if its the synchro-mesh?

any ideas matron?

did vw strip your gearbox or did they just take the car for a test drive?

if its the same problem as mine, a test run (unless its for well over 30mins) wouldn't necessarily show anything wrong.

i described the fault to my local dealer over the phone who seemed to think it was the synchromesh, which would mean a taking the gearbox apart and replacing the offending piece. they also mentioned the selectors could be at fault (another gearbox strip to resolve).

either way its a bit of sphincter twitch when you look at the cost involved

is it not a good sign if it vibrates in the hand as well
