Whats the story behind the "gl" model mk2 and are the rare ?

Rarer than a GTI - VW sold more GTIs than non-GTIs IIRC.

Not nearly as good.

Not nearly as rare as a Syncro.

there nothign spectial and there not really rare.

same as a CL just with a 1.8 instead of a 1.6   

normaly only found with basic equipment
