is the mk2 16v price explosion about to happen?
« on: 03 September 2004, 11:18 »
been noticing that mk2 16v's are becoming very thin on the ground nowadays - there is none for sale in the whole of ireland!!

also been noticing that prices are starting to rise sharply for late spec 16v's - and find a good original one is nigh on impossible unless u wanna pay stupid money.

Yeah Gambit tell me about it
I have been looking for an exceptional late valver in a dark metallic colour for 10months now!
In that time I have only found 6 cars worthy of a viewing, I have lost count of the number of cars I have phoned about and discounted without even viewing them.
I definately think the price of unmodified 90 spec valvers is likely to continue rising as the mk1's did as they started to become rare.
A couple of years ago when I first started looking at late valvers I started out expecting to pay about ?2500, I bought an oak green 16v for ?3k which was sadly written off last october. Now a year later I'm finding that I really need to be spending ?3500 at least to replace it (that makes the fact that I got ?1500 off my insurance for it even more painful).
I have seen plenty advertised at about ?4k (most with less than 100k on the clock) and I know that I would be prepared to pay that for one. I think that as long as there are die-hard mk2 fans out there like me and the cars are becoming rarer (I made my contribution to this fact last october) then the price can only continue to go up.

Just hope I find my next example before too long or I'll have to settle for a mk3 which I really don't want to do despite the fact I could have a fully loaded R plate valver for the same money.

Toby

Was thinking if I haven't found a decent mk2 by early next year I may have to go for a mk3. I don't anything against them, my ex used to have a mk3 8v which was a pretty decent car it's just the shape doesn't scream modern day classic at me quite like the mk2 does. Also I have so many ideas of what I would like to do to a mk2 that I just have to get them out of my system.

I have found prices to be extremely variable depending on colour and age. An h or j plate seem to be much more desirable than anything older and also dark metallics definately seem to command a much higher price.
