I understand that. I used to be really paranoid about having the car nicked. Maybe in my older age I'm less paranoid because I know it's well insured with GAP as well. However, I'm still very careful where I leave it (for example I won't be doing my share of away trips watching Leeds Utd in my Golf cos I'm not prepared to just leave it on a side street in some unknown destination as I used to do in the old car). I also have one of those full steering wheel metal locks which get good reviews for being a pig to remove.
Ultimately, if a scroat wants to nick it they will but I've done everything I can to make it harder for them. Much as I love it though it's still a lump of metal and I can get another one.

I like understated, but it's more to avoid looking like a cock (as James May would say) than theft concerns. IMHO, getting a car to look just right is like when a girl puts her make-up on: too little and you look bland, but too much and the whole effect is ruined :)

Agreed Frog. But I don't think the standard GTi is a particularly "flash, ostentatios" car. It's not as if it's covered in massive spoilers and lurid paint jobs. It is, however, obvious what it is to scroats, thus the need to be careful about where you leave it.
Indeed, I actually changed my mind from a red one to the grey one because I thought it might be a bit less "obvious" so I do understand where you're coming from Mr Grenouille.

Why would you want to debadge?  The whole point of owning a Golf is status surely!!!

No, the whole point of owning a Golf GTi is that it goes like a bat out of hell, while not looking like a boy racer.

Most natural rival then would be the Mazda 3 MPS.  A ton of bhp (circa 265 iirc) and very very plain jane looks.... to plain IMO.  The golf has it about right.

Well, my Golf GTi Mk VI is sitting at the docks as we speak.  If you were to infer from that that I agree with you, I would not call that unreasonable.

Damn right. Leave your garish paint and Burberry cap at the door!

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Agreed. The GTI is the only hothatch I would consider - all the others are vulgar. GTI is sheer class:

P.S. Sunday quiz time : which sad person can identify the vehicle in the background?
