Ha ha ha, my thoughts exactly...  Currently negotiating with my wife which colour looks best (i like the carbon grey) and so showed her the pictures of your car FroGTI.  She thought it was all a bit sad us chatting about cars and wheels.  She said she may set up a forum for shoes.

I know colour is a personal thing, but I really like carbon grey. I parked next to a black GTI at my dealer yesterday and TBH the black looked pretty ordinary next to the CG.

As for wheels, I don't even think my wife has noticed that I have changed mine, lol :)

I agree with many on here about those Interlagos. They look great on the Scirocco but just don't seem right to me on the GTi. Of course it's a subjective thing though.
One point that nobody's made that woiuld sway me towards the Monzas anyway is how much easier they are to clean. Having had my GTi for a month and a half I've washed it a few times and
(a) it's almost a wipe clean job - no fiddly bits like on the Interlagos
(b) they don't show the brake dust or the grime so they always look clean even when the rest of the car is grubby.
(c) I do, however, take the point about their vulnerability to kerbs
(d) Is there not a resale issue with having non-standard wheels? I was once going to change the wheels on my old Mk4 but was persuaded not to by the dealer who said come resale time the part ex value might be affected because potential customers want standard VW wheels and the ones that are associated with that particular model. Now in Frog's case they are VW wheels but not the ones people expect to get on a GTi. Of course, I appreciate this is only an issue if you're keeping the car maybe 4 years or so (like I will) and are part exing it to a VW dealer who'll retail it, but I wouldn't buy his car at 4 years old with those wheels on 'cos it just looks like a normal Golf.

i agree with all of your points (although i can't test point (a) till fri lol - but i did have the 18" monzas on my mk 5 gti).  its all down to personal taste, and i have to say i still love the 18 monzas - to me they define it as a gti at first glance.

Predictably, I disagree with you :)

The Monzas are easy to keep clean principally because, IMHO, they look dirty all the time. I really don't care for this current trend for black wheels, to me they just look as if they're caked in brake dust all the time, or as if the owner has just driven through a pool of tar...

I also do not mind in the slightest that my car looks less like a GTI; I'm not looking to be different, rather a tad 'classier' and I think the Interlagos wheels are a lot more sedate than the slightly vulgar/tuning Monzas. You may be right on the residuals, in fact I did consider hanging on to the standard 17" wheels that came with my car, but I would like to keep the GTI for many years and so do not really care.

But, as you say, at the end of the day it's all down to personal taste and I can honestly say that I do not regret swapping my wheels at all :)
