grinding/ knocking sound
« on: 03 August 2009, 13:19 »
Hi all sorry its not exactly golf related but i got a vag problem and i know u guys are full of helpful info

Great start to the golf project. Got a mk2 ibiza 1.4cls off ebay for cheap (to deal with the daily chores whilst my golf goes into winter hibernation/ project mode) I wasnt able to see it before i bought it and hoped the description of the car was accurate. Unfortunatley it wasnt

I was told it had a slight whining from the wheel bearing at 60 plus mph but otherwise drove really nice.

However the noise is constantly there and i think it might be the driveshaft or the gearbox.
When driving along it makes a loud grinding knocking noise. This happens when applying throttle or decelerating but goes away when a very slight amount of power is applied.
Also if u dip the clutch whilst moving along the noise just about goes away.

The car also lurches a little when u first pull off and u can feel the gearstick move back a little. I guess this is engine/gearbox mountings?

Any ideas guys? I have done a search on here and seatcupra.net but seem to get conflicting answers either being wheel bearing or cv joints/driveshaft

Just hope its nothing major. Only wanted the car as a runabout to and from work while my project is off the road and didnt really wanna spend any cash on it

Sorry for the long post and thanx in advance for ur help

I will now hang my head in shame and await the abuse for buying a car i didnt see first and it not being a mk2 golf

A guy off E38 had these symptoms, turned out to be the cambelt too loose.

EDIT: Wording a bit out.

Does that make my willy look bigger?

Oh yeah it's called Helda or something....

Sounds like a gearbox problem to me, have you checked the gearbox oil?

Thanx for the replies lads
Dont think it will be the cambelt coz the noise comes from the other side and the noise is in time with road wheels and not the engine. Gonna change the belt anyway so will have a look at the same time.

Im hoping its not the gearbox that is my worst case senario. Gonna have a look at the weekend and try and find the problem. Fingers crossed its the driveshaft coz if its the gearbox it goes back on ebay and ill start lookin for a cheap polo or somethin

Thanx again and wish me luck

Yes good luck mate if the noise is in time with the road wheels it can only really be box diff or wheel bearings if it was the drive shaft would be worse turning corners.
