Problem solved.  The paint was bizarrely / amazingly / weirdly contaminent free!  Never seen anything like it on a car as described.

might have been the lime prime which would explain why it was so hard to remove... top that with the colli and it make the surface quite smooth...

oh it's like glass now.  Amazing considering its 4yo, 63k miles, parked outside and only ever (before recently) been washed by car wash.  To be honest, doing all this to my mrs' zafira was only ever going to be a dry run on using the products on my mk2.  Unfortunately, I won't get a chance to do the mk2 before the weekend but will post up pics as and when.
