Dunlop tyre warning
« on: 29 July 2009, 23:37 »
Collected the mk6 GTI on Tuesday had an nightmare driving experience with the Dunlops.  The cars back end stepped out on me really badly on a roundabout when it was dry, luckily the was no traffic and i was nt really driving that fast.  I spent 8 days driving a car with very little confidence when coming to corners especially in the wet.

So returned to the dealers and requested my Good year eagles be swopped from my mk5 to mk6.

Today the swop as been completed and it feels so much better and planted, what an upgrade.

Anyone collecting there mk6 must make sure these dunlop tyres are not on there cars.

Mine's on Bridgestone 050 and it was loose in the rear initially. Now that the tyres are scrubbed in, it corners securely

Got Dunlops on mine and even with the remap putting 270'ish bhp through the wheels I can't fault the tyres.

I heard they were cr@p but they feel fine, even good i'd say.

Had dunlops originally and I thought they were fine.... Till I replaced them with something else.  Huge difference.

In fairness to the OP's comment they will take a couple of hundred miles to scrub in.  I never thought they were dangerously bad but would agree compared to almost any other performance tyre they are shyte.

there has been a lot said about the dunlop sportmaxx over on the mk5 section... unfortunately none of it good im affraid.

My car came on the dunflops, once I changed them for the goodyears I havent looked back. That was until I had a courtesy car with them on, as the OP said if your used to better they can be dangerous, very dangerous!! The problem is that they will grip like any other tyre... its just when they decide to let go you WILL know about it

Ask, complain... all the same

I would presume that the tyres are put on at the factory, wouldn't get very far off the production line without any rubber! That makes it slightly harder to chnage since it isn't a "factory fit option".

I'll drop a note to my dealer to see what can be done. Anything but dunlop seems to be the consensus!
