Roof rack
« on: 29 July 2009, 14:28 »

Being a keen snowboarder and potentially getting into surfing, what options are there for a roof rack/ rails on the gti?

I presume it would be better to go for a factory fit item, but never having had a roof rack or rails any help appreciated!

I've got the VW roof bars on my mk5 and have been told by my dealer they will fit the mk 6.

Quite easy to fit. The VW ones have rubber/plastic inserts to avoid scratching the paintwork.
Any VW dealer should sell them.

I use them now and again for bike carriers and a roof box.

Any pics please? Would be good to see the effect on looks.

Eg. I think that the audi A3 looks better with the roof rails, I wonder if it has the same effect with the golf?

Not roof rails just roof bars which are fitted as and when you need them.
If you open your front doors and look at the top you should see a hex plastic insert, this is the point for the bars to be fixed.

I have a five door mk 5 (soon to be mk6) and you need to open the doors to fit the bars.

Not sure about 3 doors...  Your dealer will know.

Mine are the official ones, £140, they are compatible with bike racks etc... and they come with a nice torque driver to fit them at the right tension level.

The front one fits in two small holes (covered by small plastic plugs) on the underside of the door frame and clamps to the roof and the back one lines up with two small arrows found printed on the top of the window and clamps on the roof and in the gap above the window.

Sorry if that sounds confusing,
