Ordered a mocal cooler today too - 21st bday pressie to myself  Been thinking about one for months, researching etc but have finally bitten the bullet. Came in at a pretty good price too. Should help lower my oil temps a tad.

Have been out today to mock up where to mount this cooler. Have a few options - opinions as to which is best would be great 



Down in the bumper recess:




Think it looks tidiest here, doesn't block the rad much and can be mounted close to the rad as per the mocal instructions. However if I flip it 180 degrees so the oil pipes are at the base it'll push the whole thing up a tad meaning air flow might be restricted? Would need to mount with pipes on base at present so they are long enough to reach the sandwich plate



Vertically behind the headlight isn't really option as there's a lot of plastic cowling in the way (I guess I could remove it though) and I think the spotlamps in the grille will be quite restrictive. Nice and close to the sandwich plate though.



Lastly, if I relocate the horn I could just bolt it to the slam panel


As I say, down in the bumper recess is the preferred place. However, I would need to mount it on the right hand side due to the rad sitting in at an angle. Anyone know how critical hose positioning is? i.e. does it matter if the hoses are on the top of the cooler or the base?

i'd say bumper recess if you can keep it low enough with the pipes on... if not, cant see a big poblem with it being up top on the slam panel, rad should get enough air and at least when the fans on it will draw air for the oil cooler a bit too..

mines next to the rad sideways, normal mk1 style, its just out of the way of the spots but i can see yours is bigger???

Cheers for that - yeah, failing that I was thinking of putting it on adjustable rods so I can fettle where it sits in the recess. Does look bigger - it's a 13 row 235mm

yeah yours is double mine pretty much, mines only a 6 row.... well if you keep the pipe work a decent length you could always do a bit of trial and error... most of your options look OK but i'm sure it will be fine next to the rad if there's space and all else fails.

Can't quite make out from the pic but are your hoses on the top or bottom mate? I figured even with the cooler covered slightly by the bumper, as it's a road car if the air flow isn't perfect it's not going to be as critical as a track weapon. Plus it might help stop it overcooling in the winter although I do have a thermostatic plate.

pipes are coming out the left side (looking at the front of the car).  shouldnt over cool if you have a themostat... mines never kicked in since i rebuilt it.. but then it hasnt been driven properly yet.

on a personal note i wouldnt mount it in the bumper recess due to stones etc damaging the fins my mates mk2 racer had his mounted to the left of the rad as you look at the front but its your car so your choice...

+1 good point, scrap the recess idea...
