What fits straight in?
« on: 24 July 2009, 16:17 »
Hello, I'm new here, getting a perfect condition, mk3 SE 1.8 for £450 with 80,000 miles on it

spax, toad alarm, alloys, low pros on it, full stainless exhaust system, very tidy, it white, and good condition too!

only one TINY dink to be sorted on the nearside front qtr.

Just asking, which engines drop straight into the mk3? as 74hp is a little underpowered for my taste...

Looking and the 1.8t (audi a3/bora) engine looks like it WONT drop in, unfortunatly.!

also, could anyone reccomend any engine performance upgrades, that will cost in the region of £600 (doesnt have to be a single upgrade). Just cant see how VW managed to make a 1.8 that was 74hp a peugeot of the same year made that in a 1.4... Will get pics once hes off holiday and I have bought the thing!

Also, the SE, is it basically a driver for styling? or is the gti/driver body slightly different?

Thanks for reading

Ryan

Anything will fit but pointless fitting say an 8v gti lump as so little gain.

The big issue you have is you need to change everything really and run a 16V / VR6 or 1.8T lump.

As your car has drum brakes, and small front discs its going to be big work to fit a 1.8t or vr6 engine into your car.

But check out lazylunactics thread here:

That is a mk4 1.8 turbo engine into a non gti mk3. Its about as hard as its going to get.

You can bolt straight in a mk3 2l 16v or 2.8VR6. But these both need hydrolyic clutch, so you would need to upgrade that as well as your brakes.

Also you would need a larger exhaust system.

There is heaps of info on this, so have a search about.

Thanks, I'm looking through now, just getting my navigation right as im new here.

I think for now I will keep it the same, looking at the difficulty. Performance is nice to have... but an insurance premium or what i can estimate at £4000 isnt.... i mean the current car is £2000 a year...

anyway!

I did have another question... it will come to me in a minute lol! :)

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

I'm 18 with a years no claims this month! :)

I also couldn't understand where a 74hp engine 5dr creates a high premium, but... thats life i suppose!

If i get insured as a named under my dad its £1200 a year but I will have to see what he says about that :D

I'm 19 with a years no claims and I can insure my VR for 1200 quid.

Unfortunately I'm unemployed so I've got to put up with a 75bhp 1.6 which is 535 quid to insure!

yer mike :afro:

the 1.8t fits in with mk3 gti 2.0 16v brackets, and the wiring can be sorted using qpeng.com

then you just have to research the rest. if you need any info or have questions, just ask or check my thread, got some info in there somewhere :D

if you do go 1.8t, i recommend you get a BAM, AMK, AYP...... engine as these come standard with the k04. will need to check if there are any more engines with the k04. basically these will give you an extra 30-40 bhp due to the turbo, so happy days!

also beware, the 1.8t conversion on a non gti is going to burn a hole in the wallet! so many little bits and bobs, not to mention buying the wiring and engine and new clutch, etc. it all adds up! also insurance........ that will be costly too. if your paying £2000 now on a 1.8, you will be looking at £4000+ i would have thought. with 0ncb and a crash, being 19, i will looking at around £2000 for my mk3 20vt with EVERYTHING declared.

also you can grab a clutch actuator that bolts on the 02a box from a ibiza/g60/mk3 2.0 16v so you can run a cable clutch and have the cable change  you can get it from VW and it costs around £60.

The joys of becoming an old fart, I can insure my group 20 4.6L V8 MG ZT, VR6 Mk3, 16v GTI MK3 and TSI 170 Sport Mk5 for less than that!
