I've seen some really cool ones.

MOT 10N
1 AM
J1 MMY

and as I said, I'd kill for M0 RAG, if it existed.

But these sorts of plates would cost tens of thousands.  I don't really fancy the obscure ones.

Private plates are all very well on old cars to disguise the age, but if you have a 59 plate you want to show it off for six months at least!!! No point in having the very latest model and pretending it's a 15 year old BMW 318, as that's what their owners seem to do.

Then again if you're a self obsessed celebrity it's okay to put a nice plate on your Ferrari or R8 I guess.....
I`d say wanting to show the world you had a 59 plate was more self obsessed ,oh look at him he has a new car he must be rich

What I'm finding with the dvla though, is that I cant get a registration starting with GIL - with the other sites I can. Not sure why or what I'm doing wrong.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

I'm afraid if you want a decent plate, then you have to pay the price.
There are loads of ones where people try and use 13 as a B, 4's as A's etc - but they all look terrible and are illegal.  You can get thousands of these on eBay!  A good old date / initials ie '11 XX' will cost you the guts of £5-7k and if you want it round the other way ie 'XX 11' its more likely to be £10-13k (obviously price dependant on numbers and letters).

Number plates seem to be a love 'em or hate 'em thing.  They're handy for hiding the age of your car should you desire... and it makes it easy to remember your cars number plate if you've always got the same one!!
The best thing about them though is that if you buy a decent one, it will only increase in value.

GIL is not available on a UK plate - only Irish... and the DVLA won't sell Irish plates.
'I' is not a regular UK character.

Dvla hold all the plates that have not been released yet,the other companies sell plates that are already on the market and they list the plates dvla hold but they add a premium and extras,Dvla also have auctions every now and then, same as a normal auction that is where the other plate companies pick up there plates.

So using the letter 'I' or the number '1' is not UK. So if I buy the 'Irish' version which is obviously better as they are not hung up on being allowed to use certain letters, I can still use it in the UK ?

I don't think there is any problem with using them on a UK car as I see heaps of them every day.  You will also see alot of MAZ, KAZ and others ending in Z if you look out, because Z is another non UK letter.

Aha ! It's starting to make sense now. DVLA seems best as most say for standard plates, but for the 'I' in my misses name then It seems I have to go with the Irish.
