How much would I be looking at for that? What sort of performance gain can I expect?

Remove anything you don't really need, like rear seat, spare tyre, interior trim = Free!

I think you get more torque than HP out of that.

Also a different cam, I'm not sure which is best and it seems some people have different opionions.

A good service will also see you good :afro:
As will a decent air filter, they give you maybe 2 or 3hp, but will apparently make the throttle repsonse better.
Drilled airbox also makes the throttle feel better.

A higher octane fuel will also ever so slightly increase power, you can get fuel additives to increase octane but if you're using 98/99ron already I'm not sure how that will effect your engine. Try running Redex through the old gal to clean her inards, I usually run a shot once a month.
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Any idea how much a 2l bottom end coversion costs?

I'm already planning on the air filter, possibly a drilled airbox, but need to source a spare airbox first as I don't want to drill my only airbox.

Now i know you said low cost but honestly if you want a noticable difference in the way your golf drives, save your pennys and get a 4 branch manifold, you will be suprised the difference it makes.

Hmm maybe. I'm just a bit poor atm with my MOT due, and having to buy exhaust (which was next to nothing off a forum member) radiator, handbrake cables, an POSSIBLY but hopefully not - tires.

It's about 15-20HP for a 4 branch?

Bottom end is what ever the parts cost + your time if you're handy with a spanner
Or how ever long it takes for a mechanic to do it x the cost per hour

Sorry, I'm not being precise but nothing in life is
