Various Issues (Steering, OBD etc)
« on: 22 July 2009, 18:25 »
Hi All,

I'm new here. I've taken in a Golf GTi as a P/X project to get back to good nick and either sell on, or possibly learn to drive and keep (Only ride motorbikes, never bothered with car lic., but always wanted to see how gti's drive as I've driven a few cars on land and tracks etc).

It's a 1994 MkIII on an L plate with a few bits on, looks smart as bugger, but it does have some 18" wheels and low profile tyres on, which I'm not 100% my self, but as it's not indended for me (yet), they shall be restored and stay on.

Basically I have the following issues:

Heavy Steering Perminantly - How can I diagnose either the Pump or Rack? The belt is tight as anything, so no issues with slipping. Fluid is where it should be.

OBD - I cannot find the OBD port. Mine doesn't have the sliding hole and behind the lanking plates, are the 2x2 ports. I assume these can be used with a conversion cable, but by everything I've read on here, there should still be the proper 16 pin jobbie in there?

Coolant Temp Gauge - isn't working I dont think. I only took delivery today and it's only sat idling, so probaly not gotten overly warm, but I assume these sit at 70-85*C normal, so should still allow the gauge to read ...?

I'm sure I will have some more, but for now, any advice appreciated.

Ta muchly.

my coolant gauge takes bout 5 mins to move in idle, my Gti runs bang in the middle, never goes any higher.

most likely be the power steering pump knackered, does it squeel/groan alot?

18's are wrong on mk3's and won't help the steering!! How heavy is it?
and the obd port is located behind a blanking panel next to the rear screen switch and finally it sounds like the gauge has issues (common fault) and i would try a temp switch first but its not unknown for the dials to fail!!

Thanks for replies so far.

Got the Gauge diagnosed. The temp sensor near the head in the waterline I think is knackered. I noticed it disconnected before but thought nothing of it majorly. Once plugged in the gauge works again, however after a few minutes will run badly and will drop to 3 now and again (can tell by sound, rumble and the explosions in the exhaust due to the unbrunt fuel). So I need one fo these, upon taking it out for a quick look it decided to pee coolant at me, which was an awfull colour, seems like rust so I do hope it's not plain water (has a sweet taste, so there's some anti freeze in there), so that will also get changed. Anyone know the part number and ££ for this sensor?

As to 18's being wrong, I'd agree and I dont like em, but that's when came on it, so unless I can something else for pennies, there they shall stay, as changing them will just eat into the budget for restoring it. But I'm not one for massive wheels honest. Rally spokes or steels (15/16" would be my preference).

I have the blanking panel off an all it reveals are the 2x2 style connectors not the full angled oblong 16 pin plug.

I get no sounds as I cant turn the bugger. It's parked on some type 1 compacked stone, so that combined with heavy 18's makes it nye on impossible without it moving. I'm not licenced to drive, so I may ask my bro or parent to drive it for me and give me some feedback. Not having a car lic. has caused many issues in the past when working on them, just not been fussed for the lasy few years. My bike's keep me transported.

Thanks for everything so far and more adviced welcomed and appreciated.

you need a 2x2 obd1 to 16pin obd2 convertor cable (ebay is your friend)
oh and regards the steering...I assume you have got the engine running?

This is correct, as it's a pre-1995/6(?) car, it'll have the OBD1 diagnostic ports, which you've found.

Only the post 1995/6 cars had the OBD2 port which can be found here.. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=66384.0

You'll probably need an adapter cable which can be found on ebay

Also, just remembered, I get "IN 02" everytime I turn the ignition on.

Flashes 4 times, then goes, any info on this? Nothing in search.
