ALL ELECTRICS STOPPED AND ENGINE WONT TURN

After a day under the car in all the glorious rain weve had over the last few days, I have another problem............

The problem is that I went to start the car today and I switched it back to position 2 before it had chance to fire up.  I went to start again and found I had no power to any electrics.  The only time I get power to some electrics is when I wallop the steering wheel, the the interior lights come on.  The central locking doesnt work unless I open the door then slam it hard.  Whenever I go to start it, the car makes a relay clicking sound and then the clocks make noises, go mad but still wont turn.

Do any of you know if theres a main fuse which controls everything inside the car which may have blown or any earth ponts which may need looking at.

If you have any other ideas it would be of help also.

Someone out there must have had this problem before.

do you think your battery shorted out somehow with the rain???

very strange. you may have blown a fuse. check them all. what condition is your battery in?

battery is brand new but will put a volt tester on it in a mo and check the fuses.

If anyone else has any ideas, would be great

regardless the electronics will still come on

You get the interior lights as he mentioned bot no ignition lights and obviously no starter if its immobilised.

Water in the fuse box. Commen for mk3s to leak and let water go into the fusebox. Check the floor and underside of the dash for dampness.

Water can cause corrosion on a long term basis but it cannot cause a short it is only 12 volts. If that was true we would cause a short if we put our hands across the battery as we are primarily made of water.

Ign switch or damp in the fusebox.

Mikester is right in what he is saying, water will short out 12v electrics.
