GTi issues!!
« on: 21 July 2009, 16:04 »
I've been reading through the forum and found it very helpful tho, i can't seem to find anything that is exactly like my problem.

Alot of Mk3 GTi 8vs seem to be cutting out on everyone (mine also)  but what happens to mine is it will drive for about a week and then start to cut out....if i leave it for a week it will be okay again for another week...

I've checked relays and cleaned the throttle body and it hasn't made a difference.

About a month before it started happening the car wouldnt start but cut out straight away, resulting in a new egnition switch...would this have any impact on the car still?

Also is it tru that the older the mk3s can't be hooked up to have the error determined electronically (Mines a 1993)

Any help wold be much appreciated as i can't really afford to take it back to the garage!

Thankyou!!

Cheers mate, i have actually printed that out and it's at my house ready for me to use :)

One thing i think it could be is the oil breathers but i'm not entirely sure where they are, as some times my car does start hunting (Reving up and down for no reason)

If anyone could tell me what to look for and what to do with these would be much appreciated.

This is my first Golf that i got 2 years ago when i was 18 and would very much like to keep hold of it till i can get insured on a VR6!!

In Idle, does it rev up and down alot? Whats your idle speed rpm. and how much does it drop and rise....

a common problem is vac pipes split, look around engine/throttle body/inlet manifold for broken/split vac pipes.

This will cuase idle problems and cutting out, and is a cheap fix.

hope this helps. **my gti has a leaky pipe somewhere, has cut out a couple of times when dipping the clutch, and my idle is at 800rpm.
I think thats abit low. i think it should be around 900rpm. but i can never get chance to look at it properly, I could now, but its raining lol.

one more thing, when i dip my clutch, sometimes the rev drops to around 500rpm, wanting to cut out, then jumps back to 800rpm.... i'm hoping mines just a vac pipe as said...

my car will idle anything from 800 - 1200....but that still wouldn't really explain why it only lasts about a week does it?

i do have a split pipe on one of the hoses near the air filter...at the top of the engine...

haha I'm only 20!! I think a 2.0 8v for an 18 year old is pretty good! (18 is when i 1st got it :))

i have been trying to get hold of a VR6 but for a 20 year old insurance will be mental!
