New Key for a New mark 4
« on: 18 July 2009, 21:17 »
Hi,
I suspect this might be an old topic here but I shall ask anyway.

Today I have bought a TD TDI on a 99/S however I think there is a problem with the immobiliser.  I managed to get a good chunk off the price to compensate but I think it will begin to give me grief.  So, I want to go about getting a new key coded to my central locking and the immobiliser.

I've referenced the maintenance section and have now recorded my part number and frequency - what is the most cost effective way of getting a new key?  Is it via somewhere like ebay or straight to VW?  also, the aforementioned post makes reference to immob2 and immob2 - how do i know which is relevant to mine.  It also states i need the SKC - how can i get this if i don't know where it is?

Sorry, all this electronic witch craft is new to me coming from a Mk2.....

Thank you.  Would you happen to know roughly what the cost might be?

Am thinking some more....  I only have the one key and its a ropey one at that.

Basically, the car sometimes will not start and i'm putting it down to a faulty immobiliser in the key itself - could it be something else thats commonly wrong on a mark 4?  Its only when the glo plug lights up when you turn the key will it start - sometimes the glo plug does not light up and therefore will not start.........

VW maybe the best bet, but not the only bet.  You're probably looking at ~£150 from the stealers.

You could get a blank key off the internet (~£40??), get it cut, program the RCL yourself & pay someone to code the immobiliser for you ~£25.

you would usually get a dash light for the immobiliser if that was preventing the car from starting

Mmmmmmmmmm, not sure it's your immob., then, as the key light uses flashes & you get a immob. inactive message in the display, when that's playing up.  I think you need to get your car scanned for any DTC's. ;)
