South African MK1

As a lot of people probably know, you can buy brand new MK1's (citigolfs) from south africa. I was just wondering how much it would cost to import one, and are the 1.6 engines GTI like?

Most than it's worth tbh.

Probably over £15k for an new OK spec Citi, inc import costs and transport costs.

The 1.6 is no GTI-alike really but has some poke to it with 100hp in the new 2007 model and with an average 25mpg you might as well get a real GTI and have it professionally rebuilt for less than the cost of a Citi imported.

They resmeble a mk1 and thats about it, the rear quarters were changed (have a new swage line) the build quality is dire and they rust like a rusty thing, as for being a GTI then the last production car was sold in the 80's and many restored since .... never built in South Africa.

They are horrible, and convinced they are built from pattern panels that the genuine restorer wouldnt touch . :wink:

Oh dear... head's needs to be extracted out of the rear panel methinks.

Of course the had to update the interior eventually - it's logical.

They'll only rust here because they're built for a country that doesn't need to grit their roads every winter.

I just quite like the idea of being able to buy a modern MK1 for 15K imported. I'll probably never do it, but it's nice t know I can hehe.

The rear lights are horrid though.  :sick:
