MK5 info
« on: 17 July 2009, 12:53 »
Looking to get myself a MK5 gti but wanted to check in with yourselves to get some advise...

I am looking for 3 door in black with around 40k on the clock.
Any info as where would be best to buy?
Any year models to avoid? i am looking at 05 or 06
Any problems to look out for etc - rough price on values and if they tend to hold the price?

From looking on line these cars seem to be in demand and not so easy to get hold of?

Also how does the mk 5 compare to the Audi a3 - I believe they share the same engine etc?
Thanks in advance

Hi rixer,

Trawl the classifieds in the forums first. The cars are usually looked after and have some extra's you most likely will not get from a stealer.
Go for as new a model as you can is my advice on the age/model.
Look in the maintenance and infor section at the top of the MKV section and there is a lot of info in there on what to look out for with new/used cars.
The GTI's are dropping below £9k now for older high mileage models and my advice would always be to go for as new a car with as low miles as you can within your budget. A full set of service stamps and MOT certificates along with a clean looking car usually points to a well cared for motor :nerd:

Finally, the A3 tends to have a harsher ride than the GTI, especially in sport or S-line model guise. I should know, I've had one and driven several. :nerd: You will also tend to get less spec for the same money.

HTH

You've obviously got good taste! Black being the best colour of course . Be wary of the main dealers, they don't always have the best, but you will get a 12 month or remainder of warranty. I'd probably buy private(with an AA inspection) as you tend to get them cheaper and you get to see the person who's owned it. You get a feel for if they've treat it well
Mine's a 3door black on an 07 with 24K miles. Totally standard. As far as I'm aware, there are 2 different engine codes, the newer from 07 onwards. Don't know the difference (think ones a BWA code).
I'd got a buyer for mine a while ago when I fancied a ED30. But it was still going to cost £2K more for same year with 30bhp more, so didn't bother.
Prices dropped quite a bit with the credit crunch, but have surprisingly risen again! Since then, they're getting harder to get hold of. I'm considering selling mine again.
At the mo for mine, they fetching between £13K - £14K private and £15K-£16K Main dealers.
I suppose it depends on how much you've got to spend, treat yourself, you'll not regret it !!

One of the perks of having an older car. You should also have the 10 speaker setup aswell ;)

sorry to hijack the thread a bit but I saw the post on the sound system the other day and you've just reminded me of it alan. Mine is a 56 plate GTI and has the ten speakers but seemingly no amp and just the rcd300 but with the 6 disc changer in the arm rest.

Doesn't really seem to make sense to me to be honest.

To the OP though, you'll love your mkv once you've got it. Great car to run around in every day.

The earlier cars had more speakers, then they trimmed them back for Model year 06. Have a look at this thread:-

Check out the current Volkswagen Driver (GTI Special). I'm pictured with my car on page 56(I think)!
