exhaust boxes??
« on: 14 July 2009, 13:37 »
Probably a real thick question here lads, but my gti exhaust has 3 boxes, Cat, middle box and back box.

The car had a dtm styleee stainless steal back box on it when i bought it,  but i wouldnt mind it to sound a bit grunty, at the momment its no different to standard. if i removed the middle box for straight through would it make any difference and would it drop the back pressure causing performance to drop off?? also i take it its not needed for MOT?

only reason i ask is i have seen a few full systems on fleebay and neither have middle boxes!

cheers

You could leave the middle box but remove the front silencer, that would also make a difference.

dont worry bout the back pressure, if anything, a slight increase in power will be gained, not much tho, but still, a better breathing engine is what u want. I'm gettin a cat back system soon, by the end of this week I am hoping anyway. Would love a Full System but are toooooooo expensive

I would love to remove the middle box as it goes in at one side and comes out diagonally opposite, hardly straight through. Think I will wait till after mot though.

When my middle silencer's baffle went south for the winter i decided to replace it with a straight through piece from the cat & at the same time i got a Stainless Steel back box fitted which I had anyway cos the rear box was rotten and got them both sorted at the same time thus saving notes!

Not bad all for £180 notes, especially as the bloke who did it increased the bore size of the exhaust.

With all of this done the car now barks, growls and pops (on down shift) and all got through the MOT fine.
