What next?
« on: 10 July 2009, 22:42 »
So I've got a 2.0 8v gti in black. She's not perfect but there is a special bond developing between us.

I'm thinking to the future & I can see myself still owning her in a couple of years, but I know what I'm like. 110bhp is not going to be enough. I'm slowly working on her sorting out rust patches, my install is almost finished. I've been looking into maybe putting a vr6 in but can't seem t find a definitive answer to my questions.

Pros & cons?
What will I need to change?
Ball park figure for engine, fitting?
What other engines are available?
Is it really worth putting a vr6 in?
What could I do to my engine now to get what extra out of it? She's done 146,000!

I'm thinking if I can keep her I'll start putting a lot more effort in now. If not I'll probably change cars.

Help me make my mind up boys & girls.

if your gonna drop a Vr6 in then would be cheaper and quicker to sell yours and buy a vr6. . . . reasons being. . insurance should, might be more than a stock vr6. plus its not just an engine swap, clutch, ecu? gear box? brakes and so on. . . .

inless the shell of your 8v is mint with no rust or rot or anthing then do the swap.

As above buddy lots to do when you can pick up a VR for £1500.
If you cant part with the rusty tug (like me)
Cam £60-300
Exhaust £300
Air box Mods,  Free
Filter £30
Chip+ Remap £300
MK2 Gearbox £60
Can go on and on but you will not get VR power without FI just VR mpg

But if you really love her then do the swap, nothing beats the smell of oil and bloody fingers

This is it. If I was to drop the vr in then I'd work on it all now.

Remove all external plstic trim, smooth it all out & respray.
Fully soundeadened with custom fibreglass pods
spray up the dash & interior
312mm brakes
coilovers & 17s

I'll have 18months to get all this done then when it's all done drop a vr in & just enjoy it for a couple of years. I'll be 28 when I'm looking at the swap so insurance isn't a problem & will have 2-3k to spend on a new one.

If I don't go down the vr route I'll probably go e class, 7 series or gs300.

Other than a vr what else could go in a mk3?

Audi 1.8T?
Audi TT?
Seat cupra?
Porsche?

I haven't got any idea just naming random cars.

An R32 sounds interesting. Although doubt I'd get the engine for what I'll be looking to spend. Let alone fitting it.
