couple of questions on mk4 gtis and gti 1.8Ts
« on: 08 July 2009, 12:02 »
Hi,
looking at buying someything like an 02 of one of these cars in the immediate future and had a couple of questions.  Aiming at keeping for as long as feasible

1.  Mileage.  I'm looking to stick under 60k if I can but many are over 60k of course.  What sort of mileage do people start to run into problems with these cars?  Ie if over 100k then I'm more relxaed at buying a 70k one for example  what are the views of you guys whop have them?

2.  Cam belt.  Some adv with some do not.  My guess is £300.  Do they all really need to be done around 50-70k and then left to the 100+ mark?

3. 1.8T vs 2.0 views?  Assuming 1.8T far faster, any experiences anyone would share?

Anyone looking to sell one in the london area (02/52ish) at around the used car price guidelines feel free to pm
any help much appreciated.

cheers
P

Have a look here matey. Well worth a read through and covers off some of your questions and will help point you in the right direction.

Steer clear of the 2.0 if you are looking to tune and want a bit of performance.

Around 80k is a bit of a killer IMO - OEM rear axel bushes (and front wishbone bushes in my case) go around this time - looking around £300 for each end of the car doing at a decent garage. Also shocks may start to give problems, but most ppl replace these asap to get rid of the barge like OEM handling. Also my cambelt was done by VW for the previous owner at 40k miles (when VW were saying this was the correct interval) since then this is generally taken as 60k, but i had mine done at 80k just to be sure - looking at £300ish for a cambelt and water pump doing.

thanks guys.  Good to know re 80k.  Of course older cars will start to run into probs

At the moment the 2 I saw on autotrader were 02 2.00 gti 54k miles £4595 and 51 1.8T 74k miles with cam done £3.3k both private.  Wouldn't go more than £4k for the first but have noticed lots of overpricing not surprisingly by dealers.  Price guides reckon should get one £3.5-£4k low milage but sellers disagree of course

Other looks good value esp for the 1.8T but concerned over miles.  Only a 5k a year driver so mainly want something to be reliable and not too bad on the service costs

Paddington - Welcome to the Forum mate

Personnaly I wouldnt buy off Auto trader full of sh1t - IMO - before anyone gets excited

I always buy cars from an enthusiast website eg Piston heads or off a site specific forum where majority of the time the cars are owned by petrol heads  :smug:

Have a good look round and dont pay the price on the tin, its a buyers market.... Make sure you emphasise to the seller theres a recession on and cars arent shifting  :undecided:

On the other hand if youre selling and someone tries to knock you down just make out you aint bothered if it goes as you arent despereate for the cash  :smug:

Good luck with your purchase

If looked after these cars will last - there is a guy on one of the various VAG forums who has clocked up something like 180k on his 1.8T IIRC.

As for servicing, once the bushes and cambelt/waterpump jobs are out of the way its fairly cheap to maintain;

Tyres - usual prices etc, but obviously depends what wheels, profile etc,
Oil & Filter - £35 from the dealers for the parts - about a 30min job on the drive. I do mine every 5k which some may call excessive but that's "how i roll" lol,
Clutch - not actually sure when these tend to go, but your looking at a minimum of £500 to replace. Re-mapped cars will genrally require the clutch doing sooner although this is more aimed at the derv's as their torque figures screw the ballgame up.

And thats about all i can think of for now!

Oh, and i'd deffo invest in a cheapo dummy VAGCOM cable and the freeware version of the software off ebay (~£13 delivered) just so you can scan for your own fault codes as these cars rely on fault codes for 99% of things and if you have a problem the first thing anyone will say is "get your codes scanned".

Also - MAF sensors and coilpacks WILL fail at some point - both of which will result in lumpy idle or a misfire but are cheap as chips to fix   £35 per coilpack (but make sure if one goes to replace all 4) or about £90 for a MAF. As with any parts DO NOT buy non VAG OEM, the cheaper aftermarket stuff is just that - cheap and sh!t.

Hope this helps you out mate.

Glad you have found a car your happy with but i serisouly would have said to avoid the 2.0l, your will live to regret it as they are gutless in terms of performance!

1.8T FTW!

sounds expensive for a 2.0 - despite the mileage

as long as you're happy with it though
