still have cold start noise after belt change
« on: 11 July 2003, 21:47 »
Lisa got kicked outta big brother, thats one annoying thing taken care of can you help me with this problem, please!

Previously I had posted message stating:
I have a whyning sound for 5 mins from cold start.  Initial response was change belts.

I went to the Lion garage (VAG alternative) and they said change the belts so I had the fan belt changed, the power steering belt changed and about 500 miles ago had the cambelt changed.  So all the belts are new but the whyning sound is still there.

Any suggestions what it is? Could it be mechanical? My instinct says something to do with cams or pistons??? I got a years warranty so costs are taken car of....any suggestion big or small, obvious or a shot in the dark would be much appreciated coz its driving me round the bend.

Car is a 91 Golf GTI 8v digi

Thanks

Change the timing belt tensioner, have also seen water pumps make a noise when cold. Hope this helps, Steve.

You boyz are spot on with the timing belt tensioner, belt had been changed but the tensioner hadn't....also the mechanic found that the belt was one tooth out!!!

All corrected now and the idle on my GTI is fantastically smooth feels like a different engine...faster and so much smoother through the gears.

Thanks again :) ;) :D ;D

Nice one. :)

I was advised to always change the tensioner when doing the cambelt. Its been known for those tensioners to get into such a bad state  that they break up!  :o
