Taking rear lights apart - removing lens...
« on: 22 August 2004, 10:34 »
has anyone ever tried actually taking the lens off a set of rear lights before? i have this idea i wanna try out which involves taking bits off two sets of hella rear lights to make a unique set of lights, but before i go hacking away at them, i'm a little unsure as to how to tackle it. Does anyone know if they bond the lens on by melting them on, or actually bond them using glue?

if they used glue to put them together, then i guess its a case of finding a solvent that will melt the glue and not the plastic.

which rear lights?

i doubt you will find a solvent that does that as the plastic will melt before the glue does i would say ??? can you get a dremel cutting disc between the join? you might have to do that and glue it together with a thickish sealant to compensate for the material you loose cutting into it. i would get hold of a old one and have a play first tho ;)

oh i forgot to say... yeah, it's mk3 golf rear lights, where the indicator part is the bit i want to replace  ;D ... this bit is a separate lens to the rest of the light cluster, so i'm thinking it should be possible  ???

but yeah, a play down the scrapyard or something might be in order.
