Rear Brakes

Hey all. Quick question...

I'm planning to upgrade my front brakes to 280mm ones ready for a new engine next year some time, but what about the back brakes? Should I upgrade them as well? Any ideas or details on it would be good.

By the way, I'm planning on 150-190 BHP from a new engine...

Unless you have having trouble with them, don't bother, they only do about 30% of braking at the best of times.

Hmm... But if I'm changing the front that'll mean that the front wheels will need to be a different size and I'm thinking that the Mark 2 8 valve rear brakes and G60 (280mm 4-stud) front brakes will require different sets of wheels. So is it not better to do all 4 breaks together?

I wouldnt bother unless your calipers are giving you trouble. Might be worth changing your metal brake lines now if they are rusty.

If you do want to upgrade the rear calipers then get mk4 golf ones . They fit but you need Goodrich brake hoses. Something im half way onto right now. Just found out the metal lines are all rusty :angry:

Don't bother with MK4 - it adds expense for no reason, if you must change the rears use the MK3 units - but they make 0% difference in braking, so don't just replace them because you are doing the fronts. Only replace them if you need to!

I would recommend fitting new hard lines if they are tatty though, its a quick and easy job, especially if the callipers are coming off anyway.

I would also recommend a bigger master cylinder to match the bigger fronts.
