Mk5 GTI MPG and GT TDI MPG

I paid 106.9 for super the other day, with both petrol and diesel (regular) were 101.9


My mate had a 206 1.4 diesel, it had £35 a year tax and he got 650 miles from a tank! That would do me 2 weeks driving on one tank Might get one of those and save up for a while and get a mk5 gti lol

Yeah, but I get up in the morning and actually look forward to my drive to work and cant wait for home time so I can drive it back. I bet he cant say the same . .

The 2.0T is a very jekyl and hyde engine in terms of fuel consumption.  Cruise along with gentle acceleration and you will easily hit 35 mpg, I've even seen 40 for a short while when sticking to 50 mph in 6th for a long stretch.

Drive it like a GTI and you are unlikely to see anything better than 27-28 real world.

Cane it everywhere and sub 20 mpg for sure.

Given the mpg you're looking for, I don't think the GTI is the one to go for in all honesty

Tbh, I still live at home. When I move out, it will be closer to work so really it doesnt matter about fuel because I'm going to be sorting that problem out eventually anyway

If your a red blooded male, and a true petrol head, get a GTI.

If you take it up the bum and walk with your hand at 90 degrees to your forearm, get a diesel..

I had a mk4 1.8T.  With that car, on my 20 minute / 7 mile commute (about half dual carriage way / half through medium traffic town driving) I could give it the beans coming off roundabouts etc, cruise at a steady 70-80 on the DC and make an easy 30-31 mpg.

With the mk5 to get that I have to be a bit more restrained with the accelerator and cruise more like 60-70.  Driving the way I did with the mk4 gets me 27-28.

Short answer no it isn't.  Like I say though, its very sensitive to a heavy right foot (same journey driven like a loon 22mpg).  Like AlanD says for what it is its very good fuel wise but its not the most economical car out there by a long shot.

If you're having to ask the question then just go for the DERV. It will be much cheaper to run and in real world terms no different in performance - the GTI doesnt even sound that great anyway, so you're not missing on that either!

But owning a GTI is a different matter, and it looks infinitely better than the TDI - and it will hold its value better, even with a lot of miles on.... as its a Golf GTI. 

I wouldnt mind either car for different reasons, but I KNOW I would be looking envious over at a GTI owner in a TDI....
