Mk5 GTI MPG and GT TDI MPG
« on: 17 June 2009, 13:25 »
Hey guys,

Thought I would venture into this section as I've been looking at Mk5's. I want a newer car, but also do a lot of miles so I need to think about MPG a bit more. My journey to work is mostly A roads averaging 60/70mph.

What sort of MPG would I get from a GTI doing the daily run (30 miles each way).

Also, What are peoples thoughts on the GT TDI's (facelift ones). Stuck what to do really, would love a GTI, but need economy :undecided:

Not even 100% sure if i will get one as its early days yet, but could be looking to change in a few months/early next year.

Thanks. :)

On a 30 mile run of 60/70 will easily see 30+. Depending on driving style id say between 30 - 34.

If the roads are relatively clear and you're driving smoothly you should get 30 to 35 mpg quite easily doing 60 along those roads. Perhaps more if you're careful.

Can't really compare the GTI and the GT TDI as they are different cars and in my opinion are completely different to drive.

Hmm, would need more than 30mpg really :undecided: Normally average 35 out of my mk3 so maybe my pansy driving would see more lol

In what way are they completely different? :)

If you get get a GT TDI you will see a GTI on the road and think to yourself, should have got one of them.

Its a 200bhp 2.0T engine Dec, its not going to be THAT economical. TBH Its very economical for the performance it delivers. No idea how your getting that sort MPG out of your 2.0 16v. I get better MPG out of this engine that I did out of my old 115bhp 2.0 8v.

Yer I know I will :(

I love the GTI, but need better economy in reality. How many miles do you get from a tank?

I suppose my car is lighter than a mk4, and its 150bhp so the engine isnt under as much strain to pull the weight. I dont rag it on the way to work. I managed 6.4mpg at the Pod

In a GTI, at a pretty constant 60, you will see 35mpg or above.
Easily above 30........unless the temptation gets to you that is!!

With sensible driving, and getting around 35mpg, you will probably get 350 miles, or above, from a tank.

Spot on mate. 8v is a gutless POS engine imo.

It really depends what roads you Im driving on and what mood Im in as to how much I get to a tank and varies from person to person so its REALLY had to tell what you would get. I get about 300 to a tank and thats with all the mods I have and some enthusiastic driving which isnt too bad I think.

For the last 65 hours of driving my average MPG has been 29.8MPG.

I'm sorry to say it, but if MPG is your priority, then it has to be a TDI.

You will easily get 35mpg in a sensibly driven GTI, but you'll get over 50 in a TDI.

Obviously, you won't get the same pleasure from the oil burner and IMHO, I think the old TDI engine is far too rough and noisy to live with. They are surprisingly quick, though.

I do 30 miles exactly to work and back - mix of Motorway, dual carriageway, a road and back road - real mix... but good flowing traffic

I drive around 80mph on the motorway/dual carriageway and 60 on the A roads - and the occaisonal blast on the back roads

I get regularly 33mpg

on long motorway journeys driving like miss daisy I can get 39mpg. But I also recently hooned it two and from work and got around 22mpg :D
