Respray Rust Repair HELP?
« on: 16 June 2009, 22:36 »
I am wondering if someone can help me.

I have tried to repair a patch of rust on my golf gti.

I have used spray cans to apply primer, paint and then laquer to the area, and it looks good, however when I removed the masking tape around the area, there are now raised edges where the new paint joins with the old paint.

How should I go about smoothing the edges, so that the new paint blends with the old paint?

Appreciate your response

David

Hi, firstly how big is the area??  Also did you key(rub down) the whole area and beyond or spray on to shiney paint??   It is very difficult to blend old and new paintwork especially with rattle cans.  Ideally you need to rub down where you are going to paint and a few inches beyond with very fine wet and dry, ie P1500.  Dont paint right up to the edge of the tape as the build up of paint will cause a line or ridge.   Once its painted you can the set about it with a coarse cutting compound/paste...   This will take fine amounts of paint off and remove the tiny scratches that the wet and dry left. It will spread out where the new paint joins the old, taking the line out thus making it less noticeable.   Its hard to decribe in a small space!!   Ben

Have a read through this, processes are more or less the same, whether you use aerosols, or a spray gun...
