Golf gti 1,8 8v poor rpm..

Hi!

I'v got a problem with my Golf GTi 1,8 8v from 1985.
The engine works great, but when it reaches 4500 rpm it wont go any further.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
The engine in my car is not the original one, but it is exactly the same as the old one.
However I can't remember that it would go any further then my current engine.

I'm from Norway though, so my English isn't that good;)

2 things to check.

* Ignition timing

* Camshaft timing

Double check those are both correct first.
