Right rear ABS fault
« on: 14 June 2009, 11:03 »
Hi
My cars a GTI 8v 1995.  Just before my MOT was up the ABS light came on, took it to a garage to be plugged in and came up with fault code 00287 os/r intermittent.  So i changed the senser and took it back to have the fault cleared.  Half way down the road from the garage the ABS light came back on, it was plugged in again same fault as before, was told to clean/check the abs ring on the back of the disk which i did.  Took it back and had the fault cleared and on the way home all was well.

The next day car failed the MOT on headlights and os/r front to back brake pipe. Turns out headlights were l/h drive so had to sort some replacements and i replaced the brake pipe, when i removed the pipe from the ABS pump i put a bleed nipple in to stop any fluid loss, after bleeding the brakes the ABS light was back on but went out when i took it for a spin.  At the retest while he was aligning the headlights the engine was left running, when he went to turn the engine off the ABS light was on so no MOT for me.

So i brought me a lead and got vag-com down plugged it in and came up with the same fault(00287).  I then cleared the fault code and swaped the wires on the 2 rear ABS sensers, took the car for a spin and the ABS light came back on.  Plugged in vag-com and guess what same fault code 00287 os/r intermittent even through i had swaped the wires over.

After doing a search on here it points to a faulty controller.  Am i correct in my thinking or is there anything else i can check/do to help me solve this problem and get me car back on the road.

Sorry for the long post but wanted to put as much information in as possible to help you guys understand whats going on.

Im really interested in this too, hopefully someone can tell us how to test each sensor? Had an autoelectrician out the other day to sort a screwed up alarm system and he said that although vag com shows abs sensors to be faulty it is not always correct in its diagnosis of which corner the faulty sensor is on.
MK3 GTI 16V. The fun starts at 3.5k.

Here is how to test each sensor-

5) Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the ABS sensor. If the resistance is between 1.0Kohms and 1.3Kohms then evrything's fine (try another wheel!). If it's sky high, ridiculosuly low or wavering from one extreme to the other (like mine was), then you've found your problem.

Thanks for the link GTiAdam. Checked the resistance on all the sensors and all between 1.0 - 1.1.

Got myself a pump/control unit off Ebay with the same part numbers as mine, just got to wait for to be delivered.
Hopefully this will solve my problems.

For problem like these its worth just getting a cheap simple fault code reader. i got mine for about £19.

It reads the faults and tells you which is wrong.

I have tested my sensors many times as above. it works but its time consuming, especially when you car is lowered. Since owning my car i have replaced all of my sensors at least once, and the fronts twice i think.

Also note that changing the rear sensors is bloody harder than the fronts. So to know which is broken from a reader saves a lot of time.

I got mine from talktomycar.co.uk Its not as great as Vag.com, but its simple to use, and you cant do damage, and it takes 1min to use, rather than using your laptop if you have one.

I can recomend it too, lot less hassle than lap top and better for oily fingers
They do some good kit which i have bought for my dads garage as he is not computer friendly

I agree it would have cost a small fortune to keep taking it to a garage to have the fault read, but seeing as i already had a laptop i just went for the lead.  For me the fault aways read the same code 00287 os/r intermittent even after 2 new sensers and a new ring on the back of the disk, so testing the senser with a multimeter was a way to rule it out.

Like i said i changed the abs control/pump and everyings a ok now, seames to me you can't always rely on the fault codes so its nice to have another way to test things.

No definetly agree. I use a multiple meter on mine to check. But for all the problems on this forum, I sometimes wish people just got a reader. Fir the price! Haha
