I reckon if you look around, find one with a full years ticket on it, and check out any advisories etc you shouldnt need to spend much in the first year - you can check the engine yourself for oil/water leaks, cambelt etc and if all looks ok and the bodyworks reasonablyrust free you shouldnt have a problem with an older car really - the one i just got is a 15 year old coupe, with just over 100k on it,
and a full ticket (excellent bodywork)
For peace of mind, I ran it into local mot place and had him look over it as well, just needed a couple of small bits doing and its 100%
So dont dismiss older cars as needing work done - a lot have been pretty well maintained
