Quiet Induction kit/air filter

Im wanting to try and sneak a few more horses out of my 16v mk3, and was thinking of going for either a panel filter or induction kit.  Not sure which one is best, but my main concern is the noise.  I don't want my car to sound like a jumbo jet.  A nice grumble when your booting it is fine, just not a huge roar when your just tootling around town lol.

Whats the best plan of attack?

Stick a K&N panel filter in (or similar make), this won't make any more noise. Then if you want more noise drill some holes in the front and wing side of the air box (below the filter).

Should gain you a couple of hp without the full on induction roar of an induction kit.

PS You probably won't be able to notice any real differance in performance with either modification but the noise will make you feel like your going faster

Personally I have a foot in both camps but overall still think the cone filter is best!
But if quiet is your main criteria then panel filter with drilled box!

I think that the best mod you can do with the induction is buy a cai (cold air intake ) because if you just install the cone filter it will be the same as the air box because the filter will be next to the hot engine. But if you install a cai the air will be cold because the filter will be down.

sorry but what a load of crap!!! the whole point of an airbox is that it keeps hot air out! 

hence why k&n now make induction kits that come with their own airbox!

a k&n panel filter in an airbox will make more difference than a cone any day of the week. CAI  are all well and good, but put the filter a million miles away from the inlet,which isnt really what your after. you want the air to take the most direct route possible whilst still getting a good supply of cold air.

best bet is to fit a k&n in the standard airbox. but before you do that, take the airbox off and grind out all the ridges etc.

Am fed up with having the cone vs panel debate, every forum has it a million times a year and to be honest its getting boring.

think im wrong? answer me this, why do the cone filters that make most difference all come fully enclosed? viper, bmc carbon airbox, k&n apollo, 57s.....
because airbox's are there for a bloody reason!!!!

As suggested, k&n panel filter instead of induction kit. Vaughn's brother had the highest bhp S3 in the country a couple of years ago and he is someone who investigates everything he does to his cars and if an iduction kit was worthwhile he'd have done it, but instead he just kept the standard airbox and fettled every thing else.

If you want quiet, don't drill your airbox. My Rallye airbox is drilled and put it this way, I aint sneaking up on anyone !

you just remove the trumpet from the airbox,    if ti still dosent flow enough it just means you need a turbo to help it

It's simple if you want noise and decrease in hp, get a open filter. If you want more hp keep the standard air box and get a better hi flow panel filter. Want even more hp, go buy some throttle bodys with the trumpets sticking out the front grill
