some minor mods, what power?
« on: 10 June 2009, 16:25 »
hey guys, my big plans for the mk2's new lump have been put on hold for few months at least so gonna chuck few bits i have lying around on until i can do the engine conv.
Am just wondering what kind of power figures i can expect from my 1.8 driver lump with the following mods:

Weber carb
k&n filter
GTI head
GTI cam
GTI exhaust manifold and downpipe
Full Stainless exhaust
bosch super 4 plugs
KN 10mm quad core leads

a rough idea anyone please?

cheers

From that spec I would expect to see around the 105 - 110bhp mark as that's pretty much GTI spec but with a carb not injection.

You'll get the best out of it by having the carb set up on a rolling road.

I reckon about 110-115, depending on the engine health I guess and as Horney said, how well the carb is set up.

well the engine had a full rebuild about 2k ago, and the donor head was rebuilt about 5k ago, so should be no problems there!
and will be set up properly on r/r so fingers crossed!

Lol, the leads and plugs will get you nothing unless your existing ones are knackered, the rest, IF PROPERLY set up on a rolling road (££££) may get you some extra but Id dissagree with a genuine 110-115 at the flywheel.

My thinking was an 8v gti is 112 standard, but on top of the standard gti engine he's got a well set up carb (not sure if this is better or worse than injection in terms of power?), he' got the k&n and the stainless system on his side.

well..... iv seen r/r printouts of 10bhp gain just from a well set up weber and stainless, so 20/25bhp gain with a better cam, k&n filter, better flowing head and better flowing exhaust manifold  seems reasonable to me?

i may be wrong, but around gti power was what i was expecting,is no major drama if not, so long as i notice the difference! lol

oh, and not that it'll add any power as such but will be fitting a shaved hedgehog too, so hopefully get better throttle response too

Having fitted a good GTI head to a GU, with a Weber and then only tuned it in and driven it back to back with GTIs and had other people drive it and compared it to GTIs I don't think the power figures are unreasonable, provided the motor is in good health.

GU does = ~90bhp so you're not asking much to take it to 110bhp, with a bigger set of valves and free-er breathing manifolds.

Don't forget to trim the inlet manifold heater down to about 1cm of 'spikes' - by my reckoning that makes an appreciable difference, too.

But then what do I know, I'm just some internet hero?

lol

thats what i meant by fitting a shaved hedgehog mate, that is the manifold preheater.

glad the majority think gti power is reasonable, am gutted iv had to put my engine conv on hold, but had a few finanacial probs pop up at the last minute, wont take me long to clear em, but gonna do what i can in the meantime as have my sights firmly set on a bit more power!
