Cleaning the MAF mk3 8v

Hello all

MAF, AFM whatever u wanna call it. The little box just next to the air filter with a black top and some dodgy little temper proof nut heads.

Anyone know what tool i need to buy to undo these. Ive heard its quite a specific vw tool but cant be that difficult can it? Ebay anyone?
Also has anyone used any other methods to undo these?

Any help would be great cheers

It's just a torx bit I seem to recall.  Not VW specific at all, just used to annoy the motorist.

A Torx set is useful in anyones tool kit, so just grab on of these.

Hi..as Kae says'  these fixings crop up in various places so a set of them is very handy.  You can get a set of six i think, 3/8 drive sockets from halfords..there's a tiny wire in the MAF sensor so careful how you handle the thing.
Apparently cleaning the wire can make a difference to things if that's what you were going to do, i just sprayed mine with carb/fuel injection cleaner, didn't notice any difference myself.

Yeah thats the plan. Ive just changed and cleaned the breather pipes and throttle body. Still getting a slight power loss around 3000 rpm so im gonna give the maf a clean. Worked wonders on my last car but i had it done when it was in the garage so would be nice to do it myself this time.

I'll keep a look out for these torx sets

Disconnect it and take it for a spin, if it goes ok thats your problen.

my 8v has a dip in power about there too. seems to be just the way they are...

if you really want to get rid of it then get a remap.  :grin:

so did mine. I had it RR'd at JKM in march and at 3000rpm it had a very very noticable dip in torque, you could feel it on the road pretty bad. Pipercross panel filter and new spark plugs and i cant feel the flatspot anymore.

i've just put in new plugs and leads etc... replaced air filter but just with a standard one. car is so much smoother after the service I did but there is still that flat spot...

I am tempted by the pipercross and drilled box... just can't quite bring myself to do it yet.

Well ive got chip to go in so yet more smoothness to come  :smiley:
Aftermarket panel filter deff orecommended, + you dont have to buy a new one at the next service. Just wash it out.
Drilled airbox has 2 benefits, awesome sound and more airflow.
Also, a must, is cleaning the throttle body, could contribute to the flatspot. Mine is cleaned on a monthly basis.
